65: Beautiful Albany

10 September 2024

After a nice stay in Denmark (apart from me still being crook, plus the cold, windy, rainy weather) we backtracked a little to do the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk + Ancient Empire Walk. While I’d done treetop walks before, this one was extremely well done — and very high. Nicole at first wasn’t going to do it (due to her fear of heights), but after being kindly allowed a brief “preview” by the ticket seller before deciding, Nicole decided to do it! Afterwards we both agreed it was well worth the drive and cost of admission.

Then (after ducking back into Denmark to try their sausage rolls — post to come) we headed for Albany. We stayed at the Big4 Middleton Beach, which was amazing and probably my favourite caravan park so far. Located right on the beach, not too big, with great amenities and very neatly set out, it was a pleasure to stay there for three nights.

On our first night we made the short walk to Hooked on Middleton Beach for a fish and chips dinner. They were awarded the 2018 National Fish & Chips Awards and 2024 WA Seafood Industry Awards, which we can certainly believe, as the food was fantastic — in particular the ‘melt in your mouth’ calamari.

On another night we had our ‘rain check’ anniversary dinner (after both feeling crook in Margaret River) at the Hybla Tavern (also an award winner) which was just across the road from the caravan park. Nicole had the Chicken Korma Pie, and I had the Beef Korma, which were both really, really, really good.

I loved Albany. It was big enough to have everything you needed (including 3 x Woolworths!) but small enough to still have a country town feel about it. And we were told it has zero traffic lights!

The beaches either side of Albany are also stunning, with Little Beach our favourite. Here are some photos from Little Beach …

And here are some photos of the various other spots around Albany, all within a one-hour drive …

We also did a walk from the caravan park along the Ellen Cove Boardwalk, where we had some great views (plus some exercise to work of those yummy dinners). The National Anzac Centre is on the top of this hill too, which we drove up to on another day (although we didn’t visit the centre itself).

And finally, for something a bit different, we visited Chainsaw Sculpture Drive. This fellow allows people to drive on to his property along a drive displaying so many of his amazing sculptures — all created with a chainsaw. Very, very clever stuff indeed.

So, all in all, we had an excellent time in Albany and will certainly be back again sometime in the future.
