3 January 2025
As a bit of a fun summary of our trip, here’s our Big Lap ‘Academy Awards’.
Hottest place visited … Edith Falls (NT)!
We had booked 4 nights free camping here, and after 1 full day with no air conditioner in mid 30 degrees heat with high humidity and very little shade, we went off free camping for a long time.

Coldest place visited … Tom Price (WA)!
In late June, and around 400 km inland, it got very cold in Tom Price — around 3 degrees.

Windiest place visited … Whyalla (SA)!
When we set up right on the beach at Whyalla, we thought we had it made — so we extended our stay by 2 days. Then the wind blew up and we nearly got blown back to Brisbane.

Wettest place visited … Perth (WA)!
After we had essentially been complaining about how little rain we had had throughout the first two thirds of our trip, karma hit us, and it got very wet during our stay in Karrinyup.

Most ordinary place visited … Iron Knob (SA)!
We only quickly drove through this essentially deserted town just off the Eyre Highway, but it was a shocker. A close second was South Headland.

Now for the big award … our favourite places visited!
Favourite place visited for Nicole … Yellow Water (Kakadu, NT)!
For Nicole, this was based on the Sunset Cruise and catching a Barra on her birthday. Nicole’s next 4 runner-up favourite places (in order from 2nd to 5th) are …
- Nitmiluk National Park — Edith Falls and Katherine Gorge.
- Kalbarri — For both the national park and the coastal lookouts, plus the company of new friends.
- Absolute Ocean Charters (Broome) — Awesome fishing!
- Horizontal Falls Tour — Amazing!
- Exmouth — Whale Shark tour primarily, but also the National Park and Lighthouse.
Favourite place visited for Steve … Yellow Water (Kakadu, NT)!
For me, this was based on the absolutely stunning scenery (especially around sunset), plus Nicole catching a Birthday Barra. My next 4 runner-up favourite places (in order from 2nd to 5th) are …
- Kununurra — Beautiful scenery, lots to see, nice caravan park.
- Kalbarri — Great things to see around, plus got to meet the ”Kalbarri Crowd”.
- Broome — Lovely weather, got to meet ‘Scotty’ our neighbour, awesome fishing tour, and our first “holiday from our holiday”.
- Albany — Lovely spot at Middleton Beach (one of the best caravan parks we stayed at), lovely scenery around Albany, and a lovely town which is just the right size.
Favourite place visited Overall … Yellow Water (Kakadu, NT)!
A unanimous choice from both of us. You all have to add it to your Bucket List if you haven’t been there yet.

And that’s a wrap!
