95: Big Lap by the numbers

7 January 2025

Now that we’re home, here’s a breakdown of our Big Lap in numbers …

Total distance travelled = 30,826 km.

Total nights on the road = 281.

Average distance travelled per day = 111 km.

Total speeding tickets* / traffic infringements = 0 (although we did receive a warning ticket from a parks inspector in Kalbarri — for parking on the road but apparently too close to the crest of a hill).

* We’ve only been back a few days so, touch wood, I behaved myself sufficiently driving up the East coast!

In terms of what types of accommodation we’ve used …

While we’d planned to do a lot more ‘free camping’, as mentioned in a previous post, for this trip it suited us better to use caravan parks more.

Average cost per night for powered sites in caravan parks = $50.46 (sites were much more expensive in the NT and northern WA, plus during Christmas / New Year period).

Our plan at the start was to spend the most amount of time in the NT, WA and SA … and we did!

So, we spent just a fraction under half our time on the road in WA. As I’d say to people on the road, “I used to think Queensland was big until we travelled through WA. It’s huge!

Number of car washes for our trusty Knight Riders = 3 (Darwin, Karratha and Kadina).

While we had our ups and downs weight-wise, we both ended up 1.7 kg under the weight we started the trip at. Very happy with that!

I’ll leave you with this quote from a very famous (and very smart) person …

“Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.”– Albert Einstein

Very, very wise words indeed.
