96: Big Lap Epilogue

11 January 2025

Well, Nicole and I have been back for just on one week. It’s been a busy week getting organised at home, and back at work. I’ve been slowly remembering all sorts of things like how to navigate the streets around our area, which shops we used to use, the switches and controls in the car, catching the train again, remembering everyone from work, remembering all the stuff I used to do at work and what’s changed …

It’s been a lot to take in, but it’s surprising how much you actually remember.

It’s been great having so much space to relax in again; comfy lounge, big TV, big monitor for typing this, a proper desk etc. All things I took for granted before, and surely will again soon enough.

It’s also meant a change in how Nicole and I spend our time together. I was saying to someone during the week that, while we were on our trip, it was almost like Nicole and I were Siamese twins in that we did absolutely everything together. We cooked and ate every meal together, did every grocery shop together, saw every sight together, did every site setup together. It’s actually something very special to share that with someone for such a long period of time; and really elevates your relationship (or at least in our case it did).

This quote says it well …

“It doesn’t matter where you’re going, it’s who you have beside you.” — Unknown

But this quote probably says it better …

“Road trips can either suck monkey balls or, with the right person, they can be awesome sauce with cheesy fries.” — Penny Reid

Thank you so very much for all the awesome sauce with cheesy fries Nicole; what an awesome trip! And thanks very much Katelyn for looking after everything so well while we were away.

I know the trip has changed me, and most definitely for the better, but I just can’t put my finger on it at the moment. It’ll come to me in time though. Another (and last) quote helps here …

“You go away for a long time and return a different person – you never come all the way back.” — Paul Theroux

Anyway, I’m rambling now and have said enough. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this blog as much as I have writing and sharing it. And Nicole and I hope we’ve inspired you to take an adventure of your own sometime soon; it’s definitely worth it.
