The puzzle answered
From Eden, we’ve now driven up to Mittagong via Canberra. Our maps app told us this would be the quickest way, plus it would mean missing the traffic along the coast south of Sydney (which we’ve seen previously).
It also means our Big Lap has taken us through all mainland Australian states and territories, plus answers the puzzle I set in the last blog regarding the three more border crossings remaining for us before we arrive home i.e. NSW into the ACT, the ACT back into NSW and then, finally, NSW into QLD. Well done if you worked it out!
‘Road Kill Bingo‘
As you can imagine, on the almost 30,000km we have driven this trip we’ve seen a lot of road kill. Whilst we didn’t set out to play ‘Road Kill Bingo’, which would be macabre, here’s a summary in hindsight of what we did see — in approximate order of most frequently seen to least frequently seen.
- Kangaroo
- Wallaby
- Galah
- Possum
- Kite
- Fox
- Rabbit
- Bobtail Lizard
- Crow
- Emu
- Snake
- Wombat (the only 6 we saw sighted yesterday heading through the Snowy Mountains region)
- Echidna
- Eagle
- Red tailed Black Cockatoo
- Magpies
- Cat
- Cow
- Sheep
- Chicken
- Dingo.
There more probably more species than this, but this is all we could remember. We did not see a dead camel, although my Mum’s cousin and his wife (Gordon and Anne) said they saw a dead camel on their trip across the Nullarbor earlier this year, so that’s a half tick.
For those interested, we have so far hit only four animals on this trip, all birds. One we unfortunately found after the fact behind one of the spotlights; very sad. Hopefully we don’t hit any more animals before arriving home.

Last legs
We’ve got two more legs of our trip left. The penultimate leg is from Mittagong to Port Macquarie, with our final leg — this Saturday 4/1/25 — being from Port Macquarie to home.
This will be my last post for 2024. I hope you’ve had a great 2024, and have an even better 2025.
