33: Heli Fish!

26 May 2024

Nicole and I thought long and hard about this adventure option, and decided to lock it in. We got the idea from a couple we met in Winton (and then again in Mary Kathleen) whose son flies for them. They had said their son would be able to get us a discount however, unfortunately, that didn’t eventuate. Oh well, we tried.

Essentially, it’s a half day fishing charter — substituting a helicopter for the boat. Very cool and lots of fun!

We visited three fishing spots, and it wasn’t looking good at all for catching fish. No bites at all.

Part of our safety briefing was, “There are lots of crocodiles where we’re going, but if you stay 6-10 feet away from the water’s edge you should be OK.” So, in that context, “no bites” wasn’t such a bad thing.

Only one of us caught a fish, and guess who that was. That’s right … Nicole! It was at our last stop, and in the last 20 minutes before we had to head back to base.

The pilot and I were having a chat and heard Nicole crying out from up the river a bit. It sounded more like excitement than pain, but we couldn’t be sure. We both ran up to find Nicole’s rod bent over and a big fish near the water’s edge. This time it was a 60cm Barramundi. Well done, Nicole!

All in all, a great morning and a very happy Nicole (again).
