18: Motorhome Tetris

15 April 2024

We’ve been on the road for around two weeks now. We’re settling in and slowing down.

Having a motorhome, rather than a caravan and tow vehicle, has definite pros and cons. The pros revolve around not having to unhitch and re-hitch a caravan all the time, easier to park in towns, easier to set up when we arrive, and easier driving along. Plus, if you accidentally leave a cupboard unlatched, or leave something on the bench, you know all about it in around 200 metres, rather than potentially 200 km with a caravan. 🫣

At the top of the list of cons is the lack of space. It is very cosy inside, and we have limited places to keep things. As such, we need to maximise what we put in said cupboards. This provides regular opportunities to play Motorhome Tetris. The rules are pretty simple:

  1. Decide what you would like to do and what item(s) you need for that.
  2. Try to remember which cupboard, space, bag, fridge area that item is in.
  3. Open that storage space and start pulling out visible items.
  4. At some point, realise it wasn’t in that storage area after all.
  5. Place all of the items you removed back into the storage area, knowing you have little chance of getting everything back in that space like it was (similar to digging a hole and finding you can’t get all the dirt back in afterwards).
  6. Choose another storage area and repeat steps 2-5 above.

One person can play, but playing with two people adds to the level of difficulty (less space to operate in), plus can tend to heighten excitement (stress) levels.

A particularly challenging variant is Fridge Tetris, especially after shopping for groceries when you are trying to stock up for an extended period in more remote areas.

We’re getting better at Motorhome Tetris but have yet to fully master the strategy components. Plenty of time to practise though.
