31: Re-entering civilisation

17 May 2024

Since leaving Toowoomba at the end of the Easter Long Weekend, we’ve been through a few large towns and many quite small ones. And, as has been mentioned in various posts (e.g. regarding shopping non-times in Windorah), you are quite limited as to what you can buy and when you can buy it. So, there were some mixed feelings driving into Darwin.

There was a sense of confusion and weirdness about driving in traffic again, with multi-laned intersections etc.

There was a sense of elation that we could get pretty much anything we needed without having to purchase online 2 weeks in advance so we could hopefully get it delivered to an Australia Post Office.

And there was a little bit of sadness at leaving the wilderness behind.

Anyway, across visits to Palmerston and Darwin two days either side of our Berry Springs stay, we managed to get a number of things sorted, including:

  • Groceries (with plenty of fresh vegetables available and use by dates at least 2 days in the future).
  • With the help of a visit to Harvey Norman, working out that our mini-stick vacuum wasn’t working because we had accidentally dropped the filter in the bin a few days earlier (my hand up on that one).
  • Picking up a BCF portable fan from Australia Post that we had ordered online, and which had travelled from Perth to Adelaide to Katherine to Darwin to us.
  • Getting a haircut (Steve), which ended up being a LOT shorter than I had asked for.
  • Buying a new wide-angle lens for my camera — an early birthday present.
  • A new camera for Nicole that can literally take close up photos of the moon (see one of Nicole’s early photos of the moon below) — a combined birthday and Mother’s Day present.
  • Breakfast at Coffee Club.

It’s nice to be back in civilisation.
