I’m trying to catch up on my blog posts, and am very conscious that Sausage Roll Scorecard hasn’t been updated for a while. That’s not to say I haven’t been smashing them — there’s five to get through here, taking us from north of Perth into Perth itself.
Silver Coast Bakery (Lancelin)
After visiting the Lancelin Sand Dunes, we were heading straight into Perth. To sustain ourselves for the journey, we visited one of the two bakeries in Lancelin — the Silver Coast Bakery. Nicole was urging me to sample both bakery’s sausage rolls in a back-to-back Lancelin shootout, but I just couldn’t do it. Besides, as you’ll see below, the first one was so good I didn’t want to risk messing it up with a second (potentially) bad one.

In terms of the Silver Coast Bakery’s offering:
- Very friendly service (they may have heard of my sausage roll-tasting fame and done this to enhance their score?)
- Nice texture
- Good temperature
- Excellent flavour! — enhanced by the included onion bits
- A very nice town, with the shopping centre where the bakery is located very well set up for travellers (i.e. easy parking, toilet block very close etc)
- Rating — 8.8 out of 10 which puts it equal second score! (third on count back)
Umberto’s Bakehouse (Gwelup)
Nicole and I headed to a local shopping centre nearby to the caravan park we’re staying in in Perth, to get some groceries. Did they have a bakery there? BINGO!
However, we did also fancy a coffee at the nice cafe just across the aisle. Nicole said we could do both, however I didn’t think that felt right. Nicole assured me it would all be fine and we wouldn’t end up in a Perth lockup, so we bought the sausage roll.
We then went to the cafe, ordered coffees at the counter and then Nicole hid the sausage roll under her hat until the coffees were brought to the table. I never realised I was married to a criminal mastermind!

In this case, the forbidden fruit didn’t taste the sweetest, although still fairly good. Specifically …
- Good appearance
- Nice texture
- A touch dry
- Very good taste — pretty good (but no cigar)
- Rating — 8.4 out of 10.
Maritime Museum of WA (Fremantle)
While visiting the Maritime Museum of WA in Fremantle, we were a bit peckish. We had a reasonably long walk back to the car in the drizzling rain, so sausage roll time it was (plus a coffee).
The sausage roll had to be heated in a microwave, so my expectations were low. And my expectations were pretty accurate.
- Not crusty at all — due to said microwave preparation
- A bit tasteless — although did fill a hunger hole
- Rating — 6.9 out of 10.

Rottnest Bakery (Rottnest Island)
We had an early start for our day trip to Rottnest Island (post to come), so didn’t get the chance to have breakfast first. On arrival, we sized up the food options and chose the Rottnest Bakery.
All the shops etc on Rottnest Island have waist high perspex doors with big “No Quokkas” signs on them. Quokkas are everywhere! So, just how they got inside the fence I didn’t know. Until … sitting there I saw a lady literally hold the door open for one because it looked cute and hungry, plus she was trying to impress her kids. She didn’t impress me.
Anyway, we were kept company by a quokka while we ate, and then he wanted to get all up in our faces and see if my water bottle was edible. Cute but pushy …

In terms of their sausage roll offering:
- Good temperature
- Reasonable texture and taste — definitely helped that I was starving
- Novelty value with quokka action
- Above average
- Rating — 8.4 out of 10.
Kaffeine Cafe (Gwelup)
I had been fretting a little about the sausage roll heist we undertook at the cafe opposite Umberto’s Bakehouse (detailed above). So, to even the score, we returned to the Kaffeine Cafe and ordered one of their sausage rolls. Before ordering we checked for our photos on the wall behind the counter and, not seeing them, proceeded to order.

While my conscience was now clear, the sausage roll was only just average. Sad face …
- Sausage roll was HUGE! — Nicole got a mini sausage roll and even it was a reasonable size
- Had veges inside including carrot, onion, zucchini — providing an interesting texture and taste
- More like a sausage texture — not really my style
- OK on taste — but the grease content was perhaps too low for my tastebuds
- Rating — 7.4 out of 10.
