It’s been a long time between sausage rolls. Too long.
With strong support and encouragement from Nicole, I got back on the sausage roll horse in Darwin. Nicole did some proactive research for me (while she might be trying to hinder me in the Friday Weigh Ins, I think her intentions are altruistic) and found that the Outback Bakery in Fannie Bay was noted for their sausage rolls. So, off we went.
The first dilemma I faced was that there were multiple sausage roll options to choose from. Nicole had chosen well. I decided to step outside my comfort zone and went for the “Chilli Beef” sausage roll. As it turns out, the name is apt as there was plenty of beef and even more chilli. The first bite told me this was no ordinary sausage roll, with plenty of heat coming through.

While there was plenty of flavour, it probably wasn’t really for me.
I felt disappointed that I’d somewhat wasted my sausage roll experience, when Nicole came up with a very neat solution. Buy another one! Given it was only mid-morning and I had had breakfast, it wasn’t an automatic yes — but pretty close.
So, after cleansing my palette with some water I marched back into the Outback Bakery to order sausage roll number two. This time I went for the “Standard” sausage roll and immediately felt at home. Good texture, nice flavours, not too hot. Definitely a solid piece of pastry.

In summary, a very good choice from Nicole and an adventurous sausage roll outing completed.
