We’ve moved from the Flinders Ranges through the Yorke Peninsula and on to the Clare and Barossa Valleys. The Yorke Peninsula didn’t have a lot to offer, so we moved through there fairly quickly. However, there was one sausage roll sampling made on our last day there, in Ardrossan.
In the Clare Valley I sampled two (Burra and Kapunda), and then one on our last day in the Barossa Valley (Nuriootpa).
The quality has been on the high side of good but not mind blowing. Let’s dive in …
Ardrossan Bakery (Ardrossan)
On 11/11 (Remembrance Day) we found ourselves in Ardrossan, on the eastern side of the Yorke Peninsula, just before 11:00am. It was a town similar to most on the Yorke Peninsula i.e. fairly small, a bit sleepy, on the water, with a jetty.
We needed a coffee and found the best option was the bakery. So, when in Rome, eat sausage rolls!
In terms of their sausage roll offering …
- Looks pretty good.
- Nice temperature.
- Smooth texture with visible carrot pieces.
- Very good taste.
- Rating — 8.6 out of 10.

Waters Bakery (Burra)
After photographing the Midnight Oil House (from the cover of Diesel and Dust) we visited the lovely town of Burra. We’d had a nice walk around the town checking out some of the shops, and I was mentally saying to myself, “Be strong, don’t have a sausage roll … be strong, don’t have a sausage roll …” Then we walked past the bakery and the smell of baked goods was too overwhelming. Damn!
Oh well, I did try.
In terms of their sausage roll offering …
- Looks great!
- Good temperature.
- Nice taste — with a bit of a peppery taste.
- Nice texture.
- Thumbs up from Nicole who helped me out by eating a third.
- Rating — 8.7 out of 10.

Litl Mo’s Bakery & Cafe (Kapunda)
We stopped for a walk and a coffee in Kapunda and were very glad we did. We found some nice street art, and an even nicer bakery. It had a great range of food offerings, was very busy, and had very clean toilets. So, it was definitely “sausage roll with a coffee chaser” time.
While eating it we also had a very pleasant chat with a local couple that had recently retired. Nice!
In terms of their sausage roll offering …
- Looks good.
- Perfect temp.
- Good texture.
- Nice taste — slight peppery taste once again.
- Very similar to the one in Burra — but better.
- Rating — 8.9 out of 10.

Linke’s Bakehouse & Pantry (Nuriootpa)
On our final day in the Barossa Valley, we walked into the main street of Nuriootpa, as we had been regularly doing for some exercise. This time it was for the express purpose of visiting the bakery for a snack. I was after a sausage roll, and Nicole fancied a pasty.
We’d spotted this place a few times walking past, noting it’s very nice outdoor dining area under a vine of some sort — a grape vine maybe? Plus, it was an absolutely beautiful day with blue sky and a maximum of around 24 degrees. The planets were all aligned.
In terms of their sausage roll offering …
- Looks OK.
- Good temperature.
- Nice texture — with once again a bit of a peppery taste (seems to be the style here)
- Extra score for the lovely spot.
- Rating — 8.9 out of 10.
