85: Sausage Roll Scorecard — Shut down

23 November 2024

All good things must come to an end, so it’s with a degree of sadness that I’m announcing that Sausage Roll Scorecard is being shut down, effective immediately. There are a few reasons for this.

First, on this trip I’ve purchased, photographed, tasted, assessed and written up 45 sausage rolls. Given that we’ve been on the road now for 239 days, that makes a sausage roll every 5.3 days. There’s no way I’d eat a sausage roll every 5.3 days at home, so I need to break this habit quickly.

Second, there are only so many ways I can try to differentiate one sausage roll from the next. Apart from looks, temperature and taste, there isn’t much left to split them, so you’ll see my ratings have become a bit similar.

Third, after our ‘wining and dining’ experiences in the Clare and Barossa Valleys, plus the Adelaide Hills, the Friday Weigh-ins have become a bit tight. So best I quit while I’m (just) ahead.

For something that started on a whim when Nicole and I enjoyed our first bakery stop in Roma on Day 4 of our trip, it’s somehow developed a life of its own. It’s also become the most popular part of this blog, with the SRS groupies being led by the Two Gregs (as opposed to The Two Ronnies). Thanks guys, and sorry.

In terms of state representation in the final list:

  • Queensland — 3 at an average score of 7.33
  • Northern Territory — 5 at an average score of 7.50
  • Western Australia — 26 at an average score of 7.98
  • South Australia — 11 at an average score of 8.19.

So, while Western Australia provided the quantity, it seems South Australia delivered the quality — although WA wasn’t far behind.

Before I confirm the final SRS Podium, here are some sundry other awards …

Now to the podium …

  • Third place with a score of 9.0 … Dongara Bakery (Dongara / Port Denison)
  • Second place on count back with a score of 9.1 … Flinders Food Co (Hawker)
  • First place on count back (tasted first) with a score of 9.1 … Kent St Bakery (Busselton)!!

Thanks all for playing along and following my sausage roll exploits. You’ve been great!
