40: Sausage Roll Scorecard — we have a new leader!

12 June 2024

After a short stay in Derby, Nicole and I packed up for our drive to Cape Leveque. This included Steve first watching a replay of the Canadian F1 GP and us cooking our ‘go to’ breakfast — bacon, fried egg and spinach on a wrap. Breakfast of nomads!

So, we were fed.

And then, we remembered Rusty’s Bakery that had been shut all weekend but was now open. I’m pretty sure you know where this is heading (if the title somehow didn’t already give it away).

So, into Rusty’s Bakery we went to order two large takeaway coffees and a sausage roll; with, once again, much encouragement and enthusiasm from Nicole.

For an unexpected stop, and from a town that had not appealed to us all that much, the sausage roll was … great!

My assessment …

  • Nice and fresh, definitely baked that morning
  • ‘Goldilocks’ temperature (not too hot etc)
  • Great taste
  • Good texture
  • A very nice bakery
  • Good, friendly service — to the point of providing his (grey) and hers (pink) takeaway coffee cups so that we wouldn’t mix up the one with the sugar (mine)
  • Rating — 8.6 out of 10.

Now, just to make sure I wasn’t being too enthusiastic, Nicole also tasted the sausage roll as part of my strict quality control and probity measures. And Nicole agreed, the sausage roll was indeed very good.

So, there we have it, a sausage roll that has finally surpassed the very first sausage roll sampled this trip — and the inspiration for Sausage Roll Scorecard — in Roma. As they say, life is like a box of chocolates (or a hot box of sausage rolls perhaps).

Current scorecard

  • Derby (8.6/10)
  • Roma (8.5/10)
  • Darwin — Standard (8.3/10)
  • Darwin — Chilli Beef (7.4/10)
  • Humpty Doo (7.3/10)*
  • Pine Creek (7.3/10)*
  • Katherine (7.2/10)
  • Cloncurry (7.0/10)
  • Winton (6.5/10)
  • Wyndham (6.4/10)

*Note that where scores are tied, the sausage roll tasted first is placed highest in the list.
