So welcome to the Knight Riders on tour blog!
We’ve got a long journey ahead of us (around 9 months), so we want to try to ease into things to start with. Some gentle stretching exercises you could say, so that no hamstrings are torn trying to sprint out of the starting blocks too quickly.
The idea to travel around Australia first hit Nicole and I way back in 2012, when we were going to travel around Australia in 6 months, in our pop-top caravan, with our daughter, Katelyn. We were less than two weeks from leaving when Nicole had a recurrence of a serious health issue which stopped those plans in their tracks (no pun intended).
So now, with long service leave available, Katelyn able to watch the house and Daisy (our faithful Golden Retriever) while we are away, and our very own Hilux-based Explorer motorhome all kitted out, the trip is on in 2024!
We’ll be taking 9 months to make our first (anti-clockwise) lap of Australia — from Easter to New Year. While we’ve shared with some of you the rough plan, we aren’t going to get too involved with detailed planning and itineraries. Essentially there is no Tasmania, only western Queensland, and the extent of our travels in NSW and Victoria to be determined once we leave Adelaide. Northern territory, WA and SA are the main states to explore this trip, with our only deadline to be heading south from Broome in August sometime.
I haven’t checked the official definition of a “Gap Year” and may be stretching things considering we are in our 50s and travelling for only three quarters of a year, but I’m claiming the term under poetic license.
So, sit back and enjoy the blog as we share with you our Gap Year travels from the Knight Riders on tour blog.
