9 May 2024
Nicole and I arrived at Cooinda Lodge Caravan Park on 6 May and chose our site. We were charged nearly $80 per night for the site, which is by far the most we’ve ever paid. They certainly know how to take your money in the NT!
On 7 May we boarded our sunset tour of Yellow Water Billabong. We had heard it would be a highlight, however that didn’t prepare is for what a stunningly beautiful place this is. Absolutely amazing and something everyone should see. And it (mostly) explains the cost to stay here.
The guide told us that around 4 weeks ago the water was three metres higher (!) than it is now and that it has only been in the last 2 weeks or so that they’ve been able to run tours. We were very fortunate that we got to see a sea of water lilies; a sight to behold. Apparently in the not very distant future, as the water levels start to come down further, water buffalos (which run wild around here and can enter the caravan park) will start roaming around the billabong and stomp over and eat the lilies — one of their favourite meals.
We saw at least 5 crocodiles, and a Jabiru bird. The guide advised us that the Jabiru is the only species of stork in Australia, which means that it has a lot of work to do to deliver every baby in Australia. 🙂

We also had beautiful clouds and a gorgeous sunset. I’ll let the photos I’ve included below tell the story, and more are in the photos section. And make sure to add this place to your bucket list.
