24: San Diego

9 December 2017

We arrived in San Diego late on Wednesday afternoon. After a chance to freshen up we headed out for dinner at the Casa Guadalajara Mexican restaurant. This is by far the best Mexican restaurant I have ever been to, and one of the most fun places to eat I’ve ever been. It is huge, with all sorts of areas to sit. We sat in the area outside which was a bit like a massive beer garden, but much nicer. The beautifully mild climate in San Diego meant we could sit comfortably outside with only a light jacket or no jacket at all.

Nicole and I ordered a beer first, thinking we would have a Margarita as our second (and final) drink. We decided to order the large size Margarita, as it seemed better value for money. And then it arrived …

The top of the glass was as big as a bread and butter plate, and they took no shortcuts with the amount of alcohol used. The best Margarita I’ve had in a very long time, which matched well with the fantastic burrito I had with it. Fantastic!

San Diego Zoo

The next day we visited San Diego Zoo. It is rated as one of the best, if not the best, and I can see why. There were heaps of animals to see, great exhibits, and lots and lots of friendly volunteers to answer any questions we had.

Katelyn had fun looking in all the gift shops, and purchased herself her very own Polar Bear stuffed toy. Very nice indeed.

After the Zoo, we went for a quick stroll through Balboa Park, a 1,200 acre urban cultural park immediately next to the Zoo. We had a good look around at some great architecture, plus took a quick ride on the free bus.

Nicole and Katelyn then headed home, while I walked a bit further and on to the Downtown area. This was a really nice area, with plenty of people out and about enjoying the great weather. San Diego is the only larger city in America I have been to so far where I think I could live there permanently.

I caught a Lyft (ride share) home and all was going well until we got to within 2 minutes drive of our hotel. Police cars were blocking the road because a guy was refusing to leave his room, pointed a gun at a staff person, and refused to negotiate with police. The SWAT team were then called in, which is why we were not allowed to drive or walk the rest of the way. I got home in the end.

So, all in all, I really enjoyed my time in San Diego.
