18: Vegas

2 December 2017

Well, where do you start. I don’t really know what I was expecting from Las Vegas, but what we got was certainly something I’ve never experienced before — and perhaps won’t again.

We arrived at the Gold Coast Hotel late on Wednesday afternoon. Our CEO had arranged a stretched limousine to pick us up at 8:30pm, on to which we could BYO drinks. Our limo was a stretched Hummer — awesome! So off we headed on a drive up The Strip, drinks in hand.

Our first stop was the Welcome to Las Vegas sign. Our CEO paid a photographer to take our pic, which will be a great memory for all of us.

Next stop was, you guessed it, a wedding chapel. While we didn’t get to witness a real wedding, Manda and Sara did graciously ‘propose’ to each other to provide us with our marital fix. Katelyn got to sit in a pink Cadillac too!

Then it was back into the limo for some more drinks, more loud music and more laughs. The limo trip finished with a visit to the Bellagio Casino, where we got to watch the famous fountain show. Spectacular!

Nicole, Katelyn, Kerrin, Celeste and I then headed back to our hotel for one more drink before we finished up for the night. A great night was had by all and heaps of fun!

The next day Nicole, Katelyn and I explored Las Vegas on our own. We visited the Excalibur, Luxor and MGM Grand casinos before breaking for lunch and doing some shopping.

After heading back to the hotel for a rest, we headed back to The Strip again where we took a ride on the High Roller. This is a huge wheel (bigger than the London Eye) that has a number of carriages which take up to 40 people each. It takes a full half hour to do a rotation and takes you to a maximum height of 550 feet — or just under 170 metres in metric numbers. Interestingly, it doesn’t stop, so you carefully hop on to a moving carriage. While we didn’t take up the option, you can pay an extra $20 each and have a full open bar for your half hour trip! That could make hopping off a moving carriage a little interesting.

We timed our run for the High Roller perfectly, as we ended up with a carriage to ourselves, and had the sunset light up for us at just the right time. The photos we got were amazing!

Then we went for a walk, had some dinner (gourmet hot dogs) and finished up at the Caesar’s Palace Casino. This was my favourite of all the casinos — beautiful inside, and the Forum Shops area had ‘streets’ that had ceilings lighted with painted clouds that really made you feel you were walking under the late afternoon sky.

So, all in all, we had a great time in Vegas — a place like no other. Next stop, more national parks …
